The Diagnosis How accurate is your doctors’ diagnosis? Jokes about “practicing” medicine aside, doctors often are forced into a position that leaves them vulnerable to making an incorrect diagnosis. Many times, insurance or hospital executives without a bit of medical training can, and often do, affect a doctors’ decision making process. Insurance guidelines based on financial expedience, formularies that do not include some badly needed medications and arbitrary exclusions to policy coverage all have an effect. These imperatives force doctors to either circumvent the system or make decisions consistent with these non-medically derived parameters. The executives become practitioners and sometimes executioners; meanwhile, the doctors must either struggle against the system or shut up and cooperate with the practice of greed-driven medicine. Can the system be restored to one which puts humanity over profit? How do we accomplish this? Think quick, or your doctor may not be around to help you when you need him!
